Alan J. Miles (1960-2000)
Alan Miles was a partner with the firm until his unexpected death in 2000 at the age of 40. He concentrated his
law practice in the area of legislative representation before the North Carolina General Assembly. He also devoted
substantial time in pro bono representation for the Center for Death Penalty Litigation. Alan was a member of the
Industrial Commission's Advisory Council and played a major role in the 1994 legislative changes to the North Carolina
workers' compensation laws.
Alan graduated from Emory University in 1982 with a major in International Studies. He received his law degree with
honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985, and admitted to practice in North Carolina and
Georgia. Before joining Bailey & Dixon in 1987, Alan was law clerk for then North Carolina Court of Appeals Judge Sarah
Parker, now Chief Justice for the North Carolina Supreme Court.
In recognition of his extraordinary career, Governor James B. Hunt awarded Alan posthumously the Order of Long
Leaf Pine, the State's highest civilian honor.
